Our Mildura web design and marketing agency is often asked by our clients which social media platform is best.

And while it’s a very fair question, given how many social media platforms there are now and how quickly the landscape is changing, it’s not something with a straightforward answer.

The truth is, there is no one best platform. Each form of social media serves a purpose and is better suited for certain people and businesses over others.

So which social media platform is best for YOUR business? Read on for Rock Solid Marketing Mildura’s take on the Instagram vs TikTok debate:

Should your business use Instagram?

With over 1.3 billion users, Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms out there. Here’s how to know whether Instagram is right for your business:

Your audience is mostly young to middle-aged people (18-40)

Compared to Facebook, Instagram is used by younger users (think under-40). With a relatively wide demographic ranging from teens to young adults, odds are pretty good that your target audience is using this app. However, if your typical customer is older, you might be better off focusing your efforts on Facebook instead.

You’re willing to create a variety of visual content

Though Instagram started out as a photo sharing app, it’s now used to share a myriad of visual content, from photos to videos to graphics and quotes. You can get really creative with what you share about your business on here. Some people don’t even user a camera at all for their posts!

It’s worth noting that if you’re looking to grow your following on Instagram, the best way to do so these days is via Instagram reels. Instagram prioritises reels over all other types of content because it’s trying to compete with TikTok, which is a video sharing app. That means more people are going to see your reels more than anything else you post.

However, if you don’t care about how many people follow you, there’s no need to worry about reels for the time being.

Should your business use TikTok?

With over 1 billion users, TikTok is catching up to Instagram’s popularity in the social media world. Here’s how to know whether TikTok is right for your business:

Your target audience is mostly young people (18-25)

Like Instagram, most TikTok users are young – but they tend to skew even younger (think 18-25). This is an app very popular amongst Gen Z-ers.

If this is an age group you want to reach, then it’s well worth considering TikTok in your business marketing strategy. If not, then it’s safe to skip this social media platform.

You are willing to create videos – lots of them!

TikTok is a video-sharing platform, so if you’re going to put your eggs into the TikTok basket, it goes without saying that you’re going to need to create lots of videos.

Be really honest with yourself: Are you willing to be a video-making machine? Or are you willing to hire someone to make videos for your account? If the answer to both is no, then you shouldn’t bother with TikTok.
