Content marketing is primarily concerned with creating and distributing content that is closely related to what your company sells in order to achieve marketing goals.

But what exactly is ‘content,’ you ask?

Whatever is published (i.e. uploaded to the internet) is considered content, regardless of its format. Blog articles, videos, white papers, e-books, infographics, email newsletters, podcasts, and ‘how to’ guides are all examples of written content. A short tweet on Twitter, a detailed instructional video on Facebook, a user-generated image on Instagram, or a long-form article on LinkedIn can all be examples. It’s all content, no matter what format it’s in!

Content ‘distribution’ (getting people to look at it) can take place across a variety of digital platforms, including social media, email, influencer networks, syndication services, other blogs, and even offline formats like newspapers and magazines.

The diagram below depicts the content marketing process:

Without great content, digital marketing is impossible. Regardless of the marketing tactics you employ, content marketing should be an integral part of your overall strategy, not an afterthought. Quality content is an essential component of all forms of marketing:

  • Social media marketing: Your content marketing strategy should come first, followed by your social media strategy.
  • SEO: Businesses that publish high-quality, consistent, search engine optimised content are rewarded by search engines with high rankings.
  • PR: Successful public relations strategies should address issues that readers care about, rather than their company.
  • PPC: In order for PPC to be effective, it must be accompanied by high-quality content.

Inbound marketing relies heavily on content to generate inbound traffic and leads.

Content strategy is an important component of most content marketing strategies.
